Im bored, so I thought I''d ask for some thoughts on something Ive been thinking a lot about. Im 17, Ive been programming C++ for 3 years just as a hobby (games mostly). And now Ive just gotten a job writing Java Servlets. The pay is great ($9.75 an hour, 40 hours a week) and its a really nice, small place. But Im a little worried: Working 8 1/2 hours a day, I wont be able to work on my game, or any game for that matter. Ive had some big plans over the summer for what I wanted to get done, now I just dont see it happening. Im afraid I''ll get sick of programming, and turn to drugs and alchohol for fun jk, I cant even spell alchohol (right?) but I could draw it''s chemical structure If this job does go well, I''ll be able to do a Co-op program during the school year. I''ll get to miss 2 (otherwise) pointless hours a day to work. That is good. What do you guys think? I start the job in a few weeks. Im at least going to try it out, but..does anyone think Im making a mistake and would be better off doing what I really want to do for free? though, writing servlets does interest me a little, game programming is far better... ratman
Take the job, learn a lot obout programming while your their, and if you decide its not for you leave. Just don''t forget about school when summer is over. Jobs and money rule, but it really is important to stay focused on scholastics if you want to be int he game industry. By the way, even if it was a game job, you still wouldn''t have too much time to work on your game. I work 14 hours a day and never touch my private projects anymore. I have no time, and when im home the last thing I want to do is spend my few free hours coding more. =P
Good luck to you....
