Exporting a sphere to 3DS

Hi! I''m pretty new to 3D modelling and I''got already problems ;-) I drew a die (first a cube and punched holes into it). Now I want to export this model to 3ds or something like that and import the model in openGL for displaying and interacting with it. Only... the problem is exporting :''( I use Lightwave en the message "only 3 polygons/vertexes supported", when I try another format -> "max 4 vertexes supported". Now I think that the spheres causes the error because 20 polygons are coming together on every top of a sphere and that is a lot more than always 3 of maximum 4 :''( :''( I searched the internet but this is my last hope... Somebody an idea? Thanks in advance!!
You can only use triangles, press shift+t in lw to tripple the polygons or freeze the mesh if it''s in splines.

Then press Ctrl+H for polygon mode and w. Check there that you only have triangles and delete 1-2 point polygons should there be any remaining from tripling.
