i have to second Blender.

the Sequence Editor is really cool, lets you alpha blend layers, add sound, does fade-in and fade-out transitions....and it''s free
Now that I think of it, one of the simple little things I made in my after effects class way back when reminds me of what you are trying to do... Here''s a link.

*what I would not give to have the DeluxePaint animation system on the PC*

I know of a company (spent a day there, was pretty cool) that used Flash 4 on IMac''s to accomplish animation. It is a very good animation program (with a tablet of course ), and Flash 5 is as well. But Flash MX has uneeded features for animation, so just stick with Flash 5. The company''s name was Colideascope Digital methinks, and they make the cartoon called Oliver''s Adventures, it''s on at 5:30 or so (Atlantic Time) on teletoon. It''s fairly funny, but that''s not the point. The point is, Flash 4/5 are very capable animation programs, so give them a go.

Mmmh, I am not at all sure ProMotion or an equivalent raster based animation paint program is the best choice for a beginner. Pixel art is not exactly the easiest, guys...
