Probably an easy texturing question

I was wondering... what all is necessary with textures. Do you have to keep the actual texture present after they have been registered? Or does OpenGL keep track of those? And if I do need to keep track of them, do they have to be in an array like they are in the tutorials? Thanks.
All you need to keep is the ID.
