I use my Roland XV-88 Synth Keyboard, Ibanez guitars, Fender bass, and various effects pedals hooked up to my computer through a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum sound card to create music using various software applications - Cakewalk Pro Audio and Cool Edit for track layouts, and SoundForge for sound effects processing. Although expensive, the Roland XV-88 was the best money I''ve spent toward music creation. I believe Kenbar is correct - game companies want one man for music that can create and record their music and give them the completed .mp3 or alternative audio file. The sound team is usually a couple people who record live sounds with a microphone and use sound effects processing and software (such as SoundForge) to create the desired effect in the game, but not someone who has a lot to do with the musical theme of the game.
