puzzle games. be it a new twist on an old title, a direct port, or an entirely new idea, i think a puzzle game contest would be cool. i like "game" related contests, they give alot more people something to shoot for, since it doesnt have to be eyecandy to be fun. i''d like to see something without metaballs win for a change anybody with me on this? -eldee ;another space monkey; [ Forced Evolution Studios ]

eldee - by George, I think you struck something there. I would personally very much enjoy participating in a contest that allows for "alternative creativity" to surface from amdist all the useless eye candy and lack of creative approach (not that there is none, but rotating cubes and metaballs don''t exactly count as creative anymore ). I personally would most like some very abstract "puzzle theme" that doesn''t tell you that you have to write a puzzle game (such as an interactive jigsaw puzzle - I know, lame, but I couldn''t think of anything else ). Anyway, something that would allow the good ol'' eyecandy to be added in and some real "theme" put into it as well. It should still be a demo contest, an interactive demo perhaps, but still a demo... After all, such elements as "puzzle" and "mystery" are (to me at least) mighty interesting...

Or perhaps you meant some other sort of puzzle games such as "lines" or "farocar" which aren''t half as interesting, IMO at least...

I''d much prefer a game to a rolling demo, infact I sugested this to NEHE before the last contest but he didn''t comment.
A puzzle game would certainly leave the contest open to newbies as well, since you don''t necesarily need collision detection or animated models.
Ummm, nah!

Games are good, except games arn''t OpenGL, they use a lot of other stuff too! It would detract alittle from the mission of the site.

I like the idea, and I would be willing to entire a contest like this, because I''d actually have a chance at making something decent. I can''t help it my vid card isn''t capable of making pretty eye candy, and this contest could be won without eye candy.

Theres a difference between game related and can be used to make a game. There is a lot of missing game stuff that isn''t on his site.

1. Playing music
2. Timing and/or frame rate indepentant rendering
3. Collision detection and response(collision detection is seen in one, but not response)

Plus games do something that OpenGL doesn''t, they have extra focus on the CPU as apposed to the GPU. I could make a game that uses OpenGL, but is totally CPU dependant.

1. Look at all the past contests, people play music in their demos
2. Many previous contest entries use timing and/or frame rate independent rendering
3. Some of them even use collision detection and response

So what is the difference between having a puzzle game contest and and other previous contest?

like i said, its all a preference. some people like the ''demo-scene'' style contests, with pulsating metaballs and display lists with dancing cubes, some people like something more interactive

voice your opinion on the matter! to puzzle, or not to puzzle?
