When processing a recording (Cleaning up background noise, etc), what programs and actions do you use? I record in Goldwave (Maybe I''m just used to it, since it was my first main audio program), then use the noise reduction in Cool Edit (Pick up the background noise then filter it out, simple). Finally, I Dynamic-Graphic effect (Usually the 15db preset) and normalise it. That''s more or less it. Hmm?
Often it''s difficult no matter what, depending on the type of noise of course. A whine at a specific frequency might be easy to remove with a band exclude (notch) filter but it''s best to find source sounds without noise

Ultimately your answer is the ''most expensive software you can afford''.

Personally I program my own. Do a search for ''sound filtering for the masses'' and you get a comprehensive html page that you should be able to use to write your own filters even if you know nothing about them.

If you have white noise (the noise your microphone, speakers amplifier produce at low levels)

this noise is present throughout the entire frequency spectrum so it is difficult to eliminate it completely....... the best you can do is use a Noise Gate - a device which cuts of all signal when it falls below a user-set threshold, so when you have quiet passages in your audio, the sound will be cut off.

Also I recommend using a parametric equaliser and cutting the high frequencies off, probably anything above 10khz - 15khz depending on your audio material.

Myself, I''ve been able to get fantastic results from Cool Edit Pro. Given enough time to practice it, you can really work some magic with Noise Reduction and Hiss Reduction together.
