Blender is a hard-to-learn, open-source, multi-platform tool for making models, texturing them, UV-mapping them, rendering scenes, making animations, and comes with a 3D game engine so that you can even make games with it. It also has many, many plugins for it written by some great people using Python. (MakeHuman, a work-in-progress, looks like it will be a cool addition as it makes people like Poser)

It is an awesome tool if you take the time to learn it, and all it will cost you is time and some frustration (for awhile, at least )

check out www.blender.org and www.elysiun.com for downloads, tutorials, gallery examples, forums, and all other Blender information.

EDIT: here is an old picture of a model I was working on (it's the only example I have online at the moment):

Nice reply wolf, I would only interject that Blender''s intefaces is different from most other 3D applications. I would not necesesarrily say that it is harder.

Once you get the hang of it, its very fast, IMHO.

I completely agree that it''s very fast, I don''t know what I''d do without Blender
I should have stated my reply clearer.
For me, it was very difficult to learn from the few tutorials that were around back then. Now there are many tutorials, so learning it shouldn''t be that difficult.
The Blender Book help a great deal, too.
Blender is like any linux tool. It seems impossible at first and you think it sucks but after a month or two you can use nothing else

Using Blender is cheating, now I know how all of you "pros" do it. At first I was overwhelmed by your "1337" skills at game developing, now I know the truth. They are all measley creations of Blender.
Okay, thanx... And, how is Maya better?

COOLNESS!
