Getting help, starting out and getting the word out
I would like to inquire with some of you who have acquired a team to develop your first game how did you go about doing it? I see amateur teams, like ourselves, that get a lot people to help out. Could it be the game idea? We wanted to start out with something simple, and I know the idea of a tank game is not that exciting but I wanted to finish something, and I did not feel like writing PONG, nothing wrong with that I just didn't feel like writing PONG. We are working on a title Tread Wars that we are looking to have a pre-alpha release by March. Through the help of these forums I have elicited one other person Convict who has taken lead for 2D art. We have some screenshots up with a place holder HUD, and a non textured tank that moves around a wrapping terrain. I seem to find it very hard to elicit a 3D modeller, I figured someone starting out, would be excited to have their work exhibited in a game, even just for a resume builder, as that is what this project started out as. This is not a game in design, but we are moving forward with the game itself.
I mean we could use sound help, because I would just go "Broom Broom" for the tank moving in a WAV file and attach it to the appropriate action. A 3D modeller looked at Turbo Squid but none of the tanks, 3DS format, fit what we need since we are planning on having moving turrets and need a tank more futuristic looking. A programmer I would like one, being lead, but we used I used a licensed version of Power Render to create the game, so unless another programmer has a licensed version it is a moot point. We can even use a story writer, we have no background story, and a concept artist, we need one of these you should see the concept art I drew as the programmer its on the Screens and Images part of the site, it isn't pretty It actually scared off a 3D modeller who was interested, but he asked for concept art I sent that to him, and I never heard from him again :|
And in development, and more importantly, when the game reaches certain milestones (pre-alpha, alpha, beta, release) how do you get the word out so people can actually play test and look forward to your game?
Thanks for your time, and I appreciate any advice you can give.
[UPDATE] You may have problems accessing the URL for Tread Wars. I forgot I manually updated my hosts file to access it early. Some people say it works fine others get a forbidden message, so I do not know if all DNS have updated[/UPDATE]
