I'd like some feedback on a pool game

Hi, It''s a pool game I''ve been working on for the past 2 1/2 months. I''m sorry to tell you that it''s in french, so if you don''t speak a little french you''ll have trouble to understand the menus (but I''m planning on making an English Version too). The game is a "carambole" aka french pool (you have to hit the 2 balls with yours to score). http://wwwetu.utc.fr/~arnaudro/ that''s the zip file: billard.zip. So I''d like your comments on the game. As there''s no credits in the game, I want to thanks NeHe tuts and VINCOOF, who has helped me with some graphic details (all the things that make the game prettier
It''s pretty good. All it needs is a few more playing options other than just French pool and a bit more realistic physics. When a ball is going slow and hits another ball, the other one goes faster. Making the menu and readme in english would also help.

heh. it''s nice, I especially like the background tables/posters/lights, although I feel it''s a bit too bright. The contrast from the hanging lights needs to be much higher imo.. that would really set it off..

unfortunaatly, though, I couldn''t even work out how to hit the ball - maybe I missed something utterly obvious, but I don''t speak french - so, well, until there is an english option (I have to say) it''s a bit hard to play for me at least :/

but otherwise looks really really nice

keep up the good work,

and your host seems very easy to push over it''s bandwidth limit btw

I don''t think the ball would go faster. If you think in terms of energy, the moving ball can only give to still ball the amount of energy the speed gives it (is it clear?). And if you consider that some of that energy (not much) is dissipated in the hit, the still ball cannot go faster than the ball that has hit it.

You didn''t missed something obvious. You have to press the spacebar + moving the mouse (while pressing the spacebar). The faster you move the mouse the harder you hit the ball.

What is imo? Is it diffuse, brightness, specularity???

But I''m definitly going to make English menu in a week or two when my finals are over.

Test my Pool Game: http://wwwetu.utc.fr/~arnaudro/ (billard.zip) Sorry, it''s in French !!!
I just feel the walls were too bright.. the roof needs to be completly black (well, nearly) I feel... really give the seedy pool room feel... a bit of colour too (red neon signs, etc) would really cap it off...

this is what i mean,

contrast!!!

I whipped that up in photoshop, since I can see this game has a lot of potential, I just want to do my part to make sure it''s as good as it can be...

Hehe...It's the first big program I write, and the first time I use OpenGL, so this is really nice to hear.

Wait...Am I blushing?!

Thanks for the helping with the design. It's a good idea. I'll make everything a little more gloomy. The picture really helped me figured out what you meant.

Nope, I couldn''t neither. I press the space bar and the camera gets freezed, when I move the mouse, nothing happens... (???)

This is what I see.

My Computer:
Pentium Celleron 466 - 256mb ram - TNT2 32MB - WinMe (lastest drivers, all working 100% ok).

oh, about 100%, your game uses 100% of the CPU all the time...

It looks nice anyway, I would like to play with it. Good Luck!

Ok, so here''s what you have to do:
press the 1 key on the numpad.

The numpad from 0 to 3 change the view.
backspace: cancel shot.
Space + mouse:shot

a,e:zoom
w:walk mode/non mode walk
z,s,q,d:moving FPS-like
f:frame rate
1 to 6: (not the numpad) changes graphics details.
Page_up/down:changes mouse sensitivity (shown in the upper right corner).
looks pretty... only the interface isn''t really intuitive...
In an ordinary FPS the a & d keys are for strafing, w & s forward and backwards... I found it also quite difficult to get a first chance to shoot the ball. The 1,2 and 3 numkeys didn''t do what I wanted, but when I pushed ''w'' I got a chance to get a decent shot with a decent view.

Making the helpfile and interface English would be nice to address a larger audience. The sort of game that I was trying to play was kinda chinese to me too. I only saw two balls... the third was missing.

Nice was the way you had to hit the ball, with moving the mouse up and down. That kinda surprised me as I was used to a bar indicating "power" of the shot.

And I found a bug: When you change the screen resolution mid-game (I changed to 800 * 600) the two balls disappear...
STOP THE PLANET!! I WANT TO GET OFF!!
When a ball is going slow and hits another ball, the other one goes faster.

what I ment was that is what heppens in your game sometimes and it shouldn''t.
