Getting Started...
Hello all,
I''m new to the site/forums. I''m interested in learning programming to attempt to make games (potentially for Windows, Pocket PC, and perhaps other platforms if it works out). I have been told C++ is my best bet for gaming, but if it''s too complex, to let Visual Basic hold my hand for a while... so to speak. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting started. What languages, any specific books, or maybe online resources, etc. I am very interested, but I am baffled at where to start. Thanks in advance.

read this article,
http://www.gamedev.net/reference/programming/features/davegpg/page2.asp
it suggests c/c++ (after reading it a few weeks ago i started learning c++, and so far im not regretting it, but that may change lol.... )
here is a little quote that i found to be quite sensible....
good luck

quote:
If you start with C/C++ and it turns out to be too difficult, there is nothing wrong with going back and learning a simpler language, such as Basic or Pascal. But I really think that if you stick with it and find the right resources, you should have no problem with C/C++.
good luck

I started reading C++ for dummies. Yes, I am a dummy. Anyway, I got about halfway through when I started reading Sams Teach Yourself DirectX 7 in 24 hours. I''d had a little experience with Basic, so that might be why I cought on to C++ so quick. Anyway, three months later, I''m programming 3D games with people on the internet.
The point? ... dunno. Just saying that C++ worked for me.
The past was unknown, the future was predicted.

the future is just like the past, just later. - TANSTAAFL
