I am game designer in a new inexperienced team. We are making a racing game. Our 3d engine is almost ready, so are many car and background models. I have to start level design and i need a level editor. I tried milkshape but it looks to me like a primitive 3dstudioMAX with no real options for level editiong. Worldcraft cannot accept any engines besides the Half Life engine. My question is: what generic(that can use our own engine and models) level editor can i use? Or do we really have to make out own editor?
Sometimes it is
why not make your own compiler for the maps then have an exporter for Worldcraft/3dsMax to your own format ready for compile.

because from what i have seen in worldcraft, it needs the half-life .exe file to run, and the half-life texture libratries. And it won;''t accept texture libraries of any other format than half-life''s.

Milkshape is nice, but primarity for characters/objects not whole levels.

Try QuArK or Blender for free programs that could be suitable..
ok. can you tell me some details about these programs? what they do and how i could use them for my own 3d engine? because quark seems to be a quake editor. The things is i am studying a million editors at the same time and i;m stressed out because i have to meet a deadline in a few hours. so any help would be REALLY appreciated.

apparently blender is not written in c++, like our engine is.

it also seems to have an engine of its own. can it be addapted to other engines?

well, Quark is actually for many different level file formats. you can even write your own format and use Quark to export that format.

You might be best of using Radient - it was made for Quake but it''s open source so you can modify it for your own purposes.
