3DS MAX R5 the newest version is retailing for around $3,200.
I don''t know about the rest of you but until I am rolling in money, I am not buying that.
I''ll stick to alternative methods of modeling... *cough* Cheaper ones.

He could just get the Demo versions. I have the Maya 4 learning edition. It was $5 US (plus like $20 CAN shipping ) It puts a watermark over anything you make, but the interface is fully functional.

Not sure about the 3ds max demo version.

Why get 3d studio max, a begginer would never even come close to learning half the features.
