Two Buttons

Hey all, I''m making a GBA Tennis game and running into some trouble assigning the controls. The thing is I want to have 4 different types of strokes, so then I''d have to use A, B, L and R. L and R are pretty annoying to have to press though since they''re on top of the GBA! The other GBA tennis games I played only used A and B so they basically simplified things, which probably sucks for any "serious" Tennis junkie. So I have a couple of questions... Does anyone know of any way to get around this limitation or any games which used buttons in a clever way? I was considering doing something like pressing both buttons at the same time. Or maybe even holding L and pressing B instead of just pressing L, since some players wouldn''t be used to the idea that you could swing the tennis racket just by pressing L. (Usually A and B are reserved for the "important" actions). My other question is, if anyone is into Tennis games (or even if you''re not) do you think it''s really important to have all 4 kinds of strokes? (i.e. topspin, flat, slice, lob). Or would you prefer it to just be simplified to two buttons? If it was 2 buttons we''d probably just have a flat (regular shot) and lob (high shot). Thanks a lot! Raj
i never played tennis, but i have played ping-poing so i have a (small) clue about spins and stuff... maybe you can have the two main buttons (a & b) do two types of shots (flat and lob?), and let the L & R buttons add spin to them (over/under?)... or something like that?

Hey thanks for the ideas Krez! I might end up doing just that hehe
I really don't see how you find the L and R buttons to be inconvenient.. most players rest their index or middle fingers on these buttons, and use their thumbs for the D-PAD and A/B.

There is nothing wrong with using the L/R buttons for whatever you need; do you have midget-hands?

While, theoretically, there''s no problem with using whatever buttons you like for whatever action you like, there are certain conventions generally used for controllers. If you want to write a game for a specific platform, then players will generally find it easier to learn if you follow the conventions for that platform.

For example, on most platforms, "action" buttons are on the main surface, while shoulder buttons are generally used as modifiers. So Krez''s suggestion fits the conventions better, so will feel more natural.
