When designing an engine the developer should shoot for 60 fps. Well at least in that Game Engine article that got posted on gamedev a few days ago that''s what it said.

What do you call an "average" machine? 60 fps is ridiculously high for a modern game. Hell, I have an Athlon 2100+ and a GeForce 4 TI 4600, and Morrowind usually runs at about 16-20 fps in the outdoor areas.

i have a t-bird 1.33ghz and a geforce2mx, i ususally get anywhere from 30-50 fps in morrowind, it doesnt even slowdown when the sandstorms come about, but my settings are lower it still looks like a beautiful game

imo a extremely high fps isnt hugely important, i think its best to get a more consistant frame rate, i would much rather play a game that consistantly held 30fps than a game that peaked at 60+ but often dropped a fair bit lower.
