Game idea: Origami Spirits

That's just another idea I'm unable to implement myself. Imagine a game where your enemies are nothing but folded pieces of paper (ever heard of origami?), and you fight them with scissors, fire and water, and they are realistically cut, burned and soaked. I believe this idea can be developed to rather interesting design features, like: - You enter a room having nothing but square wall paintings, and at once those painting fold into enemies and attack you. - You cut little pieces of your enemies, which fold themselves into tiny new enemies. - The enemies can re-fold into different shapes. - Or, better yet, you can design your own creatures by interactively folding the virtual sheet of paper (somehow similar to Rakugaki Oukoku). What's your opinion? Is anyone interested? [edited by - Chentzilla on December 20, 2002 4:22:19 AM]
That actually does sound pretty cool. I think it would work for any genre. Even designing your own creatures would work for any genre.

Factors for paper creatures,
ability to resist water, fire, and cutting,
amount of paper used,

One concept I have trouble with is, what makes them different from each other? There''s ai, even so that maybe every paper creature will act like the creature it resembles, but what of attacks? Maybe weapons and devices would be made out of construction paper, while the creatures are made of origami paper(whatever kind that is). Let''s see, buildings, if there are any, would be made of cardboard.

I see a dungeon or prison, and the paper prisoners are held against the wall with thumbtacks and pushpins.

Paper clips could be grappling hooks.

I see a 3D fighting game out of this too; but for the 3D fighting game it should be pure paper creatures all the way. Ooh, and here is a concept that I plan on working into a future project which could be fleshed out here, the design of the creatures would also include the design of their movements and attacks. Hmmm, how to balance, I imagine sort of like an RPG. You start a character and he only has but so many moves, which you program, and as you win, you can gain attacks or just one of your opponent''s attacks. Probably not many of you have played it, but there''s a 3d fighting game on the playstation called Rock''em Sock''em Robots Arena. I''d prefer not to use it''s system, I don''t think I could, paper isn''t really modular, it''s one piece molded to a form. Anyway, each robot limb had a set of attacks that it could do.

Different weapons would affect different paper types differently, like shooting needles at weak paper won''t work because they go right through, but needles would stay in heavy paper. That''d work better if the paper creatures bleed, but that''s one of the many design decisions. With needles stuck in them, you could turn on a magnet to trap heavy duty paper critters.

Back to the 3D fighter, you''d have to define only certain points on the model as being able to damage and/or defend.

Hey! I think it is a very cool idea.
I hope you develop it for a RTS...
Like having a army of origami.
I hope you develop a new kind of resource management system.
The traditional RTS is going to die out very soon.
Someone has to come up with a new one.
Like if you cut opponents you can gain their paper.
It is my pleasure to help you out... Or it''s your pleasure to help me out... ^(^
What I was thinking of primarily was a fighting game. Actually, designing your own creatures this way may prove itself very challenging (which equals boring for many players). My vision is something along the Devil May Cry/Shinobi line with a twist in form of paper-fold enemies and, maybe, enviroments. The hero itself haven''t to be made of paper (as he''s to carry scissors and other heavy objects). If you ask "How the paper enemies will hurt the hero?", I''ll tell "They are actually evil spirits possessing pieces of paper (hence the name), and the spirits can do many illogical things, so there!"
Ah, but ideas are one thousand for a penny... Anyone willing to do the implementation?

paper cuts!
the hero, instead of some overused damage system (life bar, HP), can be limited by the number of bandaids in his inventory!

That''s a cool idea. In my opinion it would be great as a artistic tech demo.
