What I''m looking for is basically GNU emacs (which I use now), except with tabs for multiple files. I downloaded anjuta, but it tends to get in my way too much, and I just want something simple.

Kate?
Problems with Windows? Reboot! - Problems with Linux? Be root!
I like Kate myself. Well, it''s not really an IDE, but it has almost everything I want in a programmers editor plus it''s easy to use.

/me waits for ConTEXT to be ported to Linux

I''m not involved with it. It just looks good.

Anjuta is my choice:

I agree with you completely. I''m so sold to it that I even use it in windows instead of Notecrap and Wordpad.

I really don''t see what''s so wonderful about vim. I mean, I''ve tried it only a little bit, and it just seems to me like it''s a waste of time to even bother learning how to use it, since for just any editor I can boot up and it''s obvious what to do. But I digress...

That''s part of what makes it so fun. Throw in automake and autoconf, and you got yourself the perfect programming enviroment.
there is this nice programers editor called beaver that i use. its not developed anymore but its to the point where its very usable and doesnt really need to be. check out beaver-project.org

IDEs in linux are blah. learn to use automake and autoconf to manage your projects.

Last thing I heard was that XEmacs had tabs. At least mine has (21.4)
