That''s the place to start
Language: C++ is the best one but difficult to learn if you have never programmed...
Books: first use the internet and discover if you love programming before you start spending any money

You''re too late man, the world is going explode. When this Y2K thing goes down, we''re all going to die! Don''t learn programming man, enjoy the rest of your short life. Go wild.
don''t buy any books...especially dont'' buy tricks of the windows game programming gurus. I would recommend learning C/C++, and just learn directx from the many tutorials available on the net. If you want a book to learn C/C++ buy ''the complete reference C++'' its probably one of the best and easiest to understand.
'Scheermesje' has the best advice so far, out of all of the advice. try the link, it will outline the best FOR YOU, pick the one that you think suts you moast.
What about me then:
For me it was C++, it's fairly simple and portable, yet is one of the moast advanced, and widely used, languages at the moment
I started programming not very long ago(5/4 months), i am making a number guessing game.
it has taken me this long 'cos im doing my A levels.
Any-way, on to the subject.
I have only one book, it was great, and unlike the name suddjests, it starts from the begining. telling the reader origins, for a few pages. But it then gets into the BEGINNERS side of programming (It assumes that you know no programming).
It then intros you into all the aspects of games, A.I, visual,...ect...(I havent got to this bit yet(only done some of the programming intro bit))
It is called "game programming all in one"
Its one of the books revewed on this site

[Edit: as you might see by the link it does have errors and wrong screenshots, but otherwise it is very usefull ]
My head speaks a language i dont understand.
