I went through that same book... and i''d have to say it was very well written.
He explains it well, and keeps humor throughout the book.

I also have to defend Lamothe. It''s not his fault windows programming is overly complicated. I loved "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" and I buy anything with his name on it. He explains thoroughly and his books are actually fun to read. About the question though, I''ve never used anything besides DirectX and OpenGL. My advice is if you want to get something up and running quickly without much windows programming. Use OpenGL and download and use the glut utilities(they do all the windows stuff for you). But if you want more power as well as better support for hardware acceleration, use DirectX. The learning curve for DirectX is steep, but stick with it and you''ll find it''s really slick.
