which one do you think is the better one? let''s just talk about the art alone in games. i think eastern art (japanese, chinese) is better...way better. compare this: FF7 above, resident evil, gundam: zeonic front. with: doom 3, unreal tournament 2003, sc:g My compiler generates one error message: "does not compile."
well whenever you bring up a question regarding taste no ones gonna win especially when you put it in a "whats better" format. but i tend to see more realism in western game art than in eastern but i see better ideas in eastern than in western. blizzard is the exception, there artwork is fantastic no matter what side you like.
what do i like better? well im a manga fan so the eastern style is more appealing to me.. the artwork in FF7 is some of my favourite of all time..

If you are talking about art for games/movies/cartoons/comics then you are talking of an entirely different style. It''s like saying do you like black and white photography or color? Do you like watercolors or oil paints? Sure, the two can be compared, but by doing so you give the impression that you do not care for the other medium. You can appreciate both forms equally for what they are.

So, my long-winded answer is that they both have their place. That said, I''ll play along with the heart of your question and put my vote in for eastern art. Although, I''m seeing more westerners and less easterners use this style.

Incidentally, my favorite painter, Van Gogh, got most of his inspiration from eastern art.

I'm not a big fan of eastern game art, mostly due to the fact that a lot of the companies seem to do people in a more stylized fashion.

As was said above though, it's a matter of taste. A lot of people like the game art produced by the eastern companies.

well, i'm not interested who's winning either..i just ask "which one do you think is the better one?" According to _you_, which one is better. just want to get the general idea of people's "taste."

Well, both arts have their own style and that''s good.

I have played the Doom3 Alpha and I must say I love it, but I also love ONI (if someone knows it) O.K. it''s old but i like the style and I think that games from Japan are much better because they are innovating.
If you play the actual shooters you think to yourself "WOW, IMPRESSIVE" but with all those realistic GFX you still know what''s comming next. It''s always the same
In games like FF7, you never know what possibilities you have. With all their little details games get more addictive. I liked those cratures/animals in FF7. (don''t remember the name) It''s like a new game in the game, getting those better .???. to reach another island and get more stuff.
I create 3D GFX for own games and I must say that it is much easier to make eastern art (textures) and in the end it looks better than realistic textures.

I favour the eastern art!

P.S.: !!! It depends on the game (UT2003 looks perfect (for its genre))!!!

I actually quite like a realistic-stylistic mix, a la Noone Lives Forever and Quake 3.
