Microphones
Well, I''ve got the microphone now - Shure SM58. Store didn''t have the exact cables I wanted. If anyone knows somewhere online (Or a store in the Northeast of England) that has what I''m looking for (''Female XLR to male 1/8'', as said below), I''d be grateful once again to this thread.
It might be worthwhile looking at http://www.maplin.co.uk/.

I''m overwhelmed in options here. Could someone give me a hand finding the Female XLR to Male 1/8?
well, heres a nice ms paint drawing. you caught me in the middle of a reloading of xp. i currently have paint, notepad, and internet explorer on my machine. ive taken everything else off and backed it up before i format the drive...
so here ya go:
the adaptor!
yes, not the worlds greatest drawing, but thats the best i can do in paint in twenty seconds.
certainly you can find an electronics store?? the british equivalent of radio shack or something. just ask a friend or look up the category in the phone book or something.

hi!
can anyone recommend the cheaper SAMSON R-21 vocal/instrument
recording microphone ? can''t afford the shure ones at the
moment...
I have a damn cheap one, which sounds exactly like
that - cheap. I have the opportunity to get a R-21 for
about $25,- , so, if anyone has experience with it please let me know if it is any good.
thanks, and a happy new year,

If you want to do some productive things with the mic (which I suppose you want since Shure isn''t exactly known for cheap lo-fi equipment), I''d recommend you use a separate amplifier for the microphone to push it to line level because most soundcards mike in isn''t worth crap. The amplifiers normally are rather expensive, but there are DIY projects out there that are at least better than what you''ll find on yiur card.
I now have the right cables too and it works a dream. Wahoo.

Check it out . The filenames relate to which mic I used and if they''ve been processed. Can you see the difference?
(Actually, if you can''t then blame your soundcard)
I''ll look into an amplifier for the future. I''m using a Creative Labs Live! (Version 6.1 or something) soundcard, which I bought a year ago now.

For those who are interested:
I just got STAGG''s copy of the shure sm58,
namely the MD-1500, for about $35,-
I don''t know how the original shure sm58 sounds.
BUT, at least the stagg one sounds a hell lot better than
my creative plastic mic LOL,
I think it sounds great. works quite well with
the built-in mic preamp of my soundblaster live!
well, finally, after I found out it wasn''t on, and then
turned it on
I always thought the sound blasters have STEREO mic in.
Seems this is not the case. On the one pin, I get
nothing at both channels when recording stereo,
and using the other pin, both channels have recorded
the same. f*ck, and I wanted to record with a second
mic from some distance, to get a sort of "room sound".
damn it.
(I talk about recording the guitar amp. I know, this
mic is for vocals, but again, even for guitar it
is better than the creative plastic mic )

Get XLR->1/4" jack, and then an adapter from 1/4" to 1/8". Much easier.
And someone mentioned the SM57 as an instrument mic - you have to realise that the 57 is in fact the 58 with a different protective cap around the top. Exact same specs.
So the 58 is fine as an instrument mic.
It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.
