Help with creating realistic asteroids for game

I have POVRay and Blender3D but not good with either. I know how to make a ball in POVRay, but I have no idea how to make it asteroids shaped. I want to make a realistic asteroid animation for my game, and I need help. If you know how to make POVRay asteroid, can you post the code and explain what it does (like this one makes the surface irregular, etc) Or can you point me to good tutorials for Blender3D or POVRay? Thanks for your help! (The game I want asteroids for is in my signature) Beyaan
No help? I desperately need help with this! Or at least point me to a site with good/free asteroids pictures that have at least 8 frames. I really want a decent looking art for my asteroids.

Hahaha I'm only doing this because I think every post you've done (no matter what thread or subject) seems to tie into you needing asteriods.

These aren't much better than yours, but try em out for now. They are real easy to make. I noticed you only have one shape for each size. Make three more sets and I'll give you some more 'stroids.

good luck

need me to point out the bugs now? hahaha

Wow, thanks man! A little better? Its a whole lot better! How did you make that? 3D modeller or program like POVRay?

If you feel up to it, feel free to add three more sets of asteroids and I can incorporate it!

Oh, the bugs? Do tell me, please. I bet most''ve been fixed by now (it''s now version .7)
Bug fixes: Better random velocites for asteroids when shooting them, but still have that horizontal or vertical movement bug when they arrive at edge of screen, I have no idea why.
The shooting don''t have any problems anymore (no more lag in shooting)
Better clean-ups.

Now now. A magician never reveals his/her secrets. Of course, since I''m no magician I''ll tell you.

I used 3D Studio Max and Paintshop Pro. In 3d max you create a couple of boxes and randomly attach them together at different angles. Then use the MeshSmooooth mod so you get what looks like a wad of crap. Finally slap a moon texture on it and you''re ready to render it out.

I choose three different angles and saved them as jpg (betcha didn''t know that all three are the same rock, eh?). In Paintshop I applied a brown tint, resized, and rotated them.

Hope this helps.

I''m going to be busy all day today (sorry, the paying boys come first), but I''ll try to get you some stuff for the weekend (provided I can get a peak at version .7 *wink wink nudge nudge*).

Peak? As in your name being in the credits and getting the full version for free? Or do you mean peek? I think you meant a peek?

I wish I have Studio Max, but it cost so much money. I only have Blender3D because it''s free. What I really want is asteroids rotating on x axis or y axis, not z axis so it''d have more depth.

If you''re a good C++ programmer, maybe you could help me iron out the bugs? And tweak up the game?

There is a good tutorial about this on about.com''s subject directory. I don''t remember the name of the site, so just do a search for 3d studio max. Basically you use the video post filters (glowing) and the particle spray/turbulence systems to make an asteroid like the one on the intro to Startrek: Deep Space Nine.
Good tip, Swacky.

The Asteroids he was useing were at best 45x45 pixels with the smallest being like 10x10, so I didn''t see the need to get overly complicated.

That said, I''m always looking for new ways to create models. I couldn''t seem to find that tutorial you spoke of. Could you be more specific on where you saw that tutorial?

thanks

Sorry, but I can''t find the link on about.com anymore. Maybe it''s dead. I loved the idea of meshsmoothing a bunch of booleaned boxes though. I guess you could use a soft selection on an editable mesh (sphere). I think it could make some nice jagged effects if you put a displacement map with a high influence and falloff set to light/shadow.
