well hello everyone I am new here, am really interested in game development , know c/c++ well java/VB to some extent could anyone redirect me to a good starting pt im making basic games(I do know that I cant make DOOm 3 or even a basic 2D game overnight).The problem with me is that i have a 56 k modem and do not have the direct x sdk (if it is really reqd I can try to get it).

You could kill two birds with one stone: buy a good book on DirectX and make sure it comes with a CD containing the DX SDK. I''d recommend "Programming RPGs with DirectX" by Jim Adams (it covers an absolute tonne of useful info relating to games in general so you can actually ignore the fact that it has RPG in the title).
