OK, I have a really strange problem. I find it absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to learn anything off a computer screen. For example, I read through NeHe''s OpenGL tutorials (just the first few) and couldn''t make any sense of it at all. I stared at the thing for HOURS without it penetrating at all. Then I decided to print it out and had a pretty good crack at starting on TicTacToe Is it just me? Well, Ritual Magic, I don''t think it''s just you. I hate reading of computer screens. Understanding code is even more difficult if the function is larger than fits on a single screen or makes use of stuff that''s defined elsewhere. It''s a lot faster to look at another page (or put several side-by-side) than it is to scroll to another section using a viewer/editor. Oh, and paper doesn''t emit light, which makes it much easier on the eyes, IMHO.

No you are not wierd. There are basically four different kinds of learning methods for people and these are: Kinetik learning, Visual learning, Hearing learning and reading learning. One of these methods typically dominate any person at a time. So being a teacher (like me) this presents a big problem in a class room since you cannot use one method on all of the students. Now, most people are dominated by the reading method which explains why most students prefer the classical approach of having the teacher at the black board explaining things and then having homework to do at home. This is a problem for those who have a different method of learning and they generally tend to fall behind in class. Not because they are stupid but because the teacher is not paying notice to the different needs of the students. Therefor these students may appear as not being as talented as the others. When infact if the teacher presented the student with an opportunity to learn by his or her own method they might infact be a star student. Unfortunately, many teachers I am sad to say does not pay attention to this or are infact ignorant of this. But getting to your problem. Reading from a computer screen is reading method and visual method being mostly dominated by reading. however, I think you are dominated by reading and also have a bit of kinetic learning. So for you, you need to actually hold the information in your hands and read it if you are to learn. Not being able to touch the information as you are used to is an obstacle for you. You could try touching the screen and moving your finger as you read, it might help but not be as efficient as actually holding the reading material.

I think it''s kinda odd though. When I first started learning C++ and DX, I looked online for stuff, and didn''t learn a damn thing, even when I printed it out. When I got books though, everything seemed so clear and I learned it without any problems. That just seems wierd to me.

I find reading from a computer screen tedious and eye-straining but reading from books, I accually enjoy (I have bought many books for this reason). I like to read books for I go to sleep, not that it helps me get to sleep (it accually keeps me awake).

So, here comes the question: Will the e-book market ever grow as much to be considered serious? What about small, flad handheld computers just for e-books. Who of you all would buy something like that and actually read books on it?

Well, as for the e-book thing, I do own a Palm Vx, and find that reading from it is quite comfortable. However, maybe it''s because I can actually hold the thing.

As long as I can''t hold my fingers between sets of pages and flick back and forth between them, I won''t use e-books. As long as I can''t write notes in the margins or highlight/underline sections, I won''t use e-books. As long as they emit light, I won''t use e-books. Compared to real bookmarks, virtual bookmarks are often clumsy, so is the ability to annotate (if it even exists).

For me, e-books have a long way to go. These issues might be resolved in the future, and I might reconsider. Then again, they may not be, in which case I''ll just stick with regular books or make hardcopy myself.
