One of the only other widely used is DLS (Downloadble Sounds format). Get the latest version of DirectMusic producer (from msdn.microsoft.com/directx) and you can use the format.

The quality is however good as your samples are. The standard ones included aren't great -- the whole point is that you can use your own instrument sets. You can make high quality ones or low quality ones or get ones that other people have made -- you can even convert your old instruments to DLS and use better compression, Which is another huge benefit -- you can even use any ACM compression for your instrument samples.
