gaming industry in singapore ?
hi guys......
I am planning to get into the gaming industry and study the game design course, specifically the artistic part. I just heard from a few seniors that Singapore is the international hub for the media ( animations/designs/gaming ). Well i didnt know this but just wanted to confirm though.......is it really the internatioanl hub......if so then is it worth studying the gaming course from singapore itself ? I do not know about the quality of education in Singapore and as far as my research on the universities that provide the gamedesign course, there are very few universities. Does anyone out here tell me wether its good to study the game design course from canada or singapore ?
all suggestions , comments are welcome.......
i am from malaysia, next year i will be studying simulation technology in australia.
as for singapore, i doubt you will get far because the island is just too small. Already industry is hit with resource constraints.
for the price, i suggest australia. Since its cheaper and more recognised.
monash and RMIT are good places to start.

well...if you choose singapore...you could go to NYP, take up the DMD course. Then in the second year, you can take up the Games Design specialisation (thats where I am right now). You''ll be learning 3d stuff and games design. then if you want to learn how to program stuff, join the I.T cource.

hi...........well i got your point to study at NYP ( nanyang polytechnic, if i am right ). but i havent yet got the answer to my question.........wether singapore is a good option over canada ? I''ve heard that the gaming industry in Singapore is really hot and probably the international hub.......is that true and is the education in singapore real good...........
How is the NYP that you are studying in ? Is the faculty good and what about placement oppurtunities after completion of the course........are there companies in singapore that would absorb fresh students from the university ?
i do appreciate and thankyou for the suggestion you gave me about the NYP course......and i will look into the university website for the DMD course.........thank you once again....

hi acrid_acid............well i browsed through the nyp site and went through the DMD course. The course looks promising....meaning learning the basic fundamentals for the 1st year and then specialising in the second year.......the course structure too is impressive .........now how about the softwares......are the latest softwares taught ? i have emailed the programe coordinates for the fees and stuff but if you can tell me.....does the university provide financial aid to international students........i think the singapore gov. has the grant system...meaning after graduation the student has to work for three years in singpare then they provide the grant..does NYP do the same....? .......
well thats it for now......and i really thank you for the advice.......it was worth it........seems i would finalise on the NYP university.....if i do take up singapore over canada ....but my primary question has not been solved..if you could help me with that.......thank you once again...

singapore is a gaming hub ???
i dont think so. i havent heard of game developement in malaysia or singapore which is anything other than independent developers.. (malaysia has a terrible piracy problem which extends to singapore. government report was 70 percent of business use pirated products..terrible)
to answer your questions, if you want to make games, go to australia or canada or US, japan.. not singapore.

hi jwalker.......thankyou once again for the reply.....well this is what i was actually looking.....its sad though that the game industry is not booming in singapore......cos the university seems to be good and also hte fees are very low as compared to canada.......but are you sure about it ? May be you are but just sad on what you said.....i had already decided over singpare.....anyway i ll have to rethink and choose canada.....allright then.....have a nice time and best of luck for australia........

Hmm, I remember El Kardian (MMORPG) was done in Singapore. But frankly that''s the only thing I''ve heard from there.
Certainly here on the west coast of Canada, gaming/animation is huge.
As far as education goes, I hear of a CDIS college (I think that''s up here? Or is it down under the border?) which is completely focused around gaming/animation/web design/etc. Although it''s pretty expensive if I remember right, I''m definately planning on giving it a look.
