Charactes modeling

There any free software to make 3D characters and export and import .3DS or .MAX??? Thx
not that I know of off hand, you might try
http://www.3dlinks.com/software_modshare.cfm
they link quite a few of freeware and opensource 3d modelers but I''m not sure if any of them specialise in character creation
