i understand the point as far as not relating to some people.. no one in my c++ class I can imagine hanging out with.. but i am sure they are nice people

anyways perhaps you arent exactly the most charming guy yourself?

and they are just classmates.. you should be paying attnetion to the teacher

You could easily be happy working somewhere with coworkers that have less of a geek quotient about them. I don''t think it''s so much the nature of the industry, it really depends on who specifically you are working with.

People who are married with families, as long as they are HAPPY with their lives, I think, tend to provide a more well rounded coworker experience than those that are just getting into the industry and inventing themselves through their programming.

Unfortunately, even when you find a good group of people, they can move on, leaving you with needing a new source of social feedback.

It would also help to not think the social aspects of your life will depend so much upon the workplace. I can vouge for that myself wholeheartedly.
It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.

Hey... AM a geek (I''m only 14 and I know basic C++) and I think that If you let the geeks in your class know that you can''t stand being with them you might be able to get a few to stop being so snoty... or whatever they''re doing... so just giv it a try... it might work... I have NO social life... NO friends (well 2 or 3)... and I have been made fun of... insulted... etc. You get the point... so just let them know in a nice manner and hopefully they might stop...

(Sorry bout all the "..."s it''s just a habbit.)
thats just how programming tends to be... guys from the football team generally do not have time or interests to spend 5 hours a day programming

There is a difference from the single young hardcore programer and the married working programmer. You are transformed from one to the other as life goes and have more things to deal with in life and not as HARDCORE with the programming since ther eis not the time anymore

I envy the 15 year olds that sit around programming now. At 27 I have exactly 4 hours a day to do something I work till 6 and goto sleep at 10.
To be brutally frank, you''re going to have to either mature or get a job in a lighthouse. There are all sorts of people in the big wide world and you''re going to have to get on with people who are very different from you, nerds or not.

I wanted to be a programmer/or maybe designer....probably programmer because I am so great at math(big ego).

Programming ability and mathematical ability are largely orthogonal.

I have a complete understanding of how to use/implement c++, visual basic, and just starting on Java.

I very much doubt that you have a "complete understanding", unless you have a different definition of the term than I do.

I am absolutely devoted to programming, but it just seems like I might end up hating my job like everyone else; what should I do?

I''ll let you into a secret. The vast majority of people working in IT-related disciplines, including programmers, are *normal people*. That may seem surprising to you, but there is actually a minority that are genuine "geeks", despite the popular notion that all programmers are geeks. Its just as likely that you''ll find people vastly different from yourself in all walks of life.

umm yeah there might be more girls than before, but check out the credits of Warcraft III:

programmers: none (there is a GUY named Andrea, when he posts on the blizzard forums his sig is "not a girl, just italian"

artists: none (I would have expected 1 or 2 out of the dozens)

designers: none

sound: ding ding ding! Lead sound is a chick

people who work at the company but don''t actually work on the game: a few here and there
this thread is funny...

i thought i''d point that out...
