Ahhh, the age old question. Need experience to get a job and a job to get experience. Classic Catch-22! I propose that we do band together like the social louses that we are and put together something that we can put our name on. So what if we''re newbies? Everybodies got to be a newbie sometime! And getting your name on a "Credits" list is a good way to get rid of that newbie title. Plus, there''s an outside chance that we may make a game that''s popular, or at least heard-of. I think we could increase our chances of making a popular game if we make our game free. Because hey, free game. Why NOT give it a try? What is there to lose? Say it becomes an enormous failure and all of the work that you''ve done goes down the tubes. Time wasted, right? Well, not really. You will have gained the experience of working on a game, even if it does fail. I''ve heard that you learn more from failure than from success anyway. Don''t get me wrong, I don''t want to fail, and I don''t think that we will fail, but a dose of realism doesn''t hurt, either. So where do we start? The beginning, I guess. We''ll need a genre: Genre, apparently, is a fancy French word for "type" RPG, flight simulator, tetris-clone,FPS, you get the idea. We''ll need a way to share source code and project files in an organized way: I know that sourceforge.com has a web-based source-code system, but I''ve never used it. Anybody that has used it out there? Any other suggestions for organizing and managing project files? We''ll also need to pick a development platform: There is a free, open source c++ compiler/IDE available for windows and linux systems called Bloodshed Dev C++. I''ve heard good things about it, and I''ve used it just a little bit. It seems pretty friendly and powerful, but it''s not quite as powerful or feature rich as MSVC++ 6. But it is free and cross-platform compatible, which could be important. I''ve not used Dev-C++ for DirectX work, but I know it''s possible. However, it would problably make more sense to use OpenGL & SDL if we use Dev-C++ for a compiler. Anyway, I''m sure you can think of many +''s and -''s for each system, and if you have another system in mind that you think will work better, please post your suggestions here. Finally, we''ll need a cool name for the project: Like Project Monkey. Or maybe some thing with an underscore in the name, to make it look like we''re doing something really technical. Project_X45e. I''m really not good at this. Suggestions, as always, are welcome. I think that''s probably a good start for discussion. In the mean time, I''ll try to come up with an HTML template and post it on my website, which I''m willing to "donate to the cause." At least until my renewal fee is due (next june) The site is www.blackbirdhobbies.com, but don''t go there yet and expect to see anything. I''ll post another messge here when I get the site ready. Yeah I would be really interested in this. Feels like I always get so tired of coding things by myself and later on giving up on the project.

Good luck but.....

I was actually in one of these. We had everything to make the team good. We had tutorials, articles, a forum, a website.... everything. We had i think around 200 members. But only about 10 of those were actually particapating. Go ahead and give your try at it. Our team slowly died due to the loss of communication.

p.s. - Picking a genre is NOT the beginning.

- Good Luck in whatever you do -

That might have been the problem, 200 persons in one team...

No. The problem is ALWAYS that only a handful of people participate. Even look at Gamedev, look at all the signed up members, what percentage of those signed up actually post?

You must realize that 200 persons is a far to biggo team to have coorinated. You can´t draw a parallell with gamedev since no one expects you to post anything.

Invader X, dont say such things. If all the signed up members on GameDev posted, think what would happen? .sen

You missed my point, just because the group is has 200 people doesn''t mean they all work.

Senses777: The world would descend into chaos. Not even Michaelson could keep up with their postings. 500 errors would reign supreme

Hi u all,

The problem with internet development is that u never know who''s behind the computer working with u. To complete a game this way u require a lot of commitment wich is something not everybody intends to do.

But if u thing your conviction is strong enough and u would really want to go forth with it I would be glad to help, i''ve had some experience but never finished a real game, so i''d be more than glad to join u in some project.

Best regards,
Anfernius
