me thinks he should learn java, as it''s well structured, is OO and has easy to program GUI. then it would be easier to step-up to C++
and plus its FREE!!

I third Python.
You know you''re a programmer when your computer is like family. When it''s more like a lover, you need help.

Dont argue with an idiot they''ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Maybe not, but some languages have a tendency to inspire them - for good or bad.
"The essence of Christianity is told us in the Garden of Eden history. The fruit that was forbidden was on the Tree of Knowledge. The subtext is, All the suffering you have is because you wanted to find out what was going on. You could be in the Garden of Eden if you had just kept your fucking mouth shut and hadn''t asked any questions."

I have to recommend Visual Basic as well. The big advantage is that you can do some fairly interesting things very easily. java-script would be my second choice for exactly the same reason.
I wouldn''t worry too much about picking up bad habits or other such things, when you''re 10 it''s more important to simply get used to controlling the computer and seeing what the program statements actually do. It''s not like he''s going to write complex software that will need to be maintained for the next 30 years :}

I''d just like to know why some people are saying not to learn any language at all. I assume they think he''s too young. I started programming when I was knee-high on an Amstrad 1640 in QBasic. I decided to learn C when I was 10, but didn''t get round to it until I was 11 Now I''m 14, and I''ve had great fun through the last few years of my life. Don''t most sucessful game programmers say they started really young?
i would suggest c/c++. or maybe just buy him a ti-83 calculator. it uses basic and is good for beginners. it''s where i started from anyways.
oops...
I am going to go along with the HTML/java-script wagon. You can get results *NOW* that way.
