Idea Review
I was talking to someone on IRC last night, and going over some of my game ideas with him. To my surprise, he didn''t like any of them. Feeling somewhat demoralised, I went to bed, but today it still bothers me.
So I''ve got a few ideas, and I''d like to post them, to see what people think. Am I boring and unoriginal, or were they just not to that particular person''s ''taste?''
OK, here goes. These are all going to be a little vague, I''m afraid, as I don''t have much development on any of them - I just write down the concept for future reference.
------------------------------------------
Idea #1 - working title ''Cyber.''
The future. The world is run by giant corporations. There is no unemployment, no crime, as the world has become one Orwellian police state. Everything anyone does is logged in triplicate.
However, you do not exist. One day a group of soldiers attacked you on the street, leaving you for dead. Before you knew it, you were a non-person. With no identity and no credentials, you turn to the only still-profitable work outside of the corporations - hacking.
OK, so the player is a hacker in a futuristic society. They take on ''missions'' for money, with which they can buy more equipment - and all the time they''re trying to find out who sent the soldiers and why they were trying to kill them.
A mission could be conducted completely ''online'' - that is, through the player''s terminal in their apartment - but many missions will require trips to actual locations in order to use terminals, steal/destroy equipment, or to deal with people.
The storyline is composed of 12 parts; the first eleven of which can be started at pretty much any time (depending on the missions which the player chooses to do). Once all 11 storylines are complete, the 12th can begin. At the end, there''s a choice of two endings.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Idea #2 - Space MMORPG
There''s a war on. Two ideologically different sides - one sponsored by the governments and UN, the other preaching ''freedom from oppression'' (has roots in anarchy). Players are pilots. Upon joining, a player is given a ship, which they keep for the duration of the game, no matter where they''re stationed. Players can form into squadrons and get sent out to do battle against players from the other side.
If you want, you can fly to different space stations. If you want to avoid a battle, say, or if you want to buy a particular upgrade for your ship.
Most of the game is spend in the cockpit of the ship, a 6DOF environment, best played with a joystick. Everything''s 3D. You get money for completing missions, which you can spend on ship upgrades, or food and supplies (if you plan on going on a journey, say from one space station to the next).
--------------------------------------------------------------
Idea #3 - Moo
Many of you will have heard this before (the ''Fun with Farm Animals'' thread), but for those who haven''t, here it is:
In the small english village of Greater Plinkington, a historic event is about to take place. An alien ship lands in the field next to Farmer Brown''s house. A hatch opens. However, rather than a blaze of light and the sounds of ''take me to your leader,'' two small green aliens run out, grab Daisy the cow (who has been watching as cows do), and run back in with her. The hatch closes.
Farmer Brown, awakened by the noise, gets up and opens his curtains. He comes face to face with Daisy, through a porthole. The ship takes off.
With an enraged cry of ''Ooarh!'' Farmer Brown grabs his pitchfork and jumps onto his combine harvester, and drives down to NASA. After threatening the Spaceship Manager with his pitchfork, he is given a spaceship, and sets off in pursuit of the alien ship.
Once aboard, it turns out that the ship is full of farm animals. Sheep, horses, pigs, goats, bulls... Farmer Brown must use them, and his pitchfork, to complete puzzles, find Daisy the Cow, and get safely back to Earth.
Gameplay is fairly simple. It''s a third-person view, in 3D. You walk up to a sheep, the sheep bleats and starts following you. You come up against an alien that''s in your way, you gather a load of sheep together and stampede them over him. You need to get over a large gap, you jump over it on a horse. That sort of thing.
The graphics style is cel-shaded. It''s not meant to be at all serious.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Idea #4 - flying cars
To understand this idea, it''ll help if you''ve seen the film The Fifth Element. Remember how the cities looked in that? Mile-high skyscrapers, flying cars.. well, that''s basically the environment this game is set in. You''re a taxi driver (coincidence, I assure you ), at the lower end of the quality-of-life scale. You get jobs through your in-car radio, with pickup points. You go to a pickup-point and collect a passenger, you get given a destination. The faster you pick them up and drop them off, the bigger the tip that you get.
Now, of course, it doesn''t stop there. You start getting interesting customers. A certain important member of the Casa Nostra (Mafia) jumps into your car, and just says ''Drive.'' With the cops after you, you''ve got two choices - you can either try and lose them, or turn the guy in. If you try and lose them, you become an outlaw. The guy isn''t ungrateful - you get given a job as a mafia driver - but you get the cops chasing you. If you turn him in, you get thanks from the police, but the mafia aren''t terribly happy with you.
It really gets going from there. High-speed chases, careful manouvers, large explosions. A continually branching storyline. Shady deals, fast cars. You get to move to different cities, and so on.
----------------------------------------------------------------
That''s all I''ve got at the moment. Are these good or bad ideas?
Thanks in advance...

Well, I sure wasn''t the person on the other end of that IRC chat last night
I find idea 1 very interesting, idea 3 very original and idea 4 very... Well, let''s just say I want to go out and buy it yesterday, so I can play it today.
(idea 2 could be good, but needs a little more development to differentiate it from similar concepts)

You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.
Idea 1 is very nice. Idea 2 on the other hand sounds like a mix between Armada and Ace Combat 2. Might wanna try to change the storyline a little. Idea 3 that''s sounds like fun; I would make my kid by it and play it with him. Idea 4.... well let''s say Crazy Taxi meets Grand Theft Auto (3). But sounds like good gameplay. Dream on.....

Idea 4 could look like this:

(but please don''t buy it. The company is run by a real scumbag).

I agree with the other posters, Idea 1 is rather original and sounds interesting. Idea 3 is probably the most original out of all your ideas sounds like it would be rather amusing and comical. I like idea 4 the best though, If based on your decisions the story and gameplay branches then i think it would be a great game, not to mention the enviroment would make for some furious chases and gameplay. Idea 2 is probalby the weak one, but i''m sure alittle expansion on the story and gameplay and I could be wrong.
All in all those are some good ideas

A dream called by any other name is still a dream, until it is obtained.
I''m sorry to be the only person here that doesn''t really like them, but I''m sure you were looking for an honest opinion. I promise everything here is meant only as "constructive" critisism.
Idea #1: sounds like a mix of that movie with Will Smith where his identity gets stolen, mixed with the movie hackers. I have that problem as well when I try to write a story, it seems like original stories are hard to come by. Plus I just don''t like the idea of a game portraying the sterotypical hacker...just sounds too cliche to me.
Idea #2: I like this one okay, only problem is again, it sounds like starcraft mixed with lost in space or something.
Idea #3: South park, but I like it, it sounds funny, but who''d play it? Kinda like redneck rampage, sounds fun, but I never really wanted to waste my money on it.
Idea #4: Fifth element meets the minority report

#1) It would be better to start with basic skills (computer use, hobbies, athletics, etc...) and then have the person choose what he''s going to do outside society, not just "You''re a hacker because that''s all you can do that''s profitable". You mean nobody wants anyone else dead or that it''s legal to hire someone''s death? What about theft? Does everything have a GPS on it? What a waste of resources. If crime doesn''t exist, then how do hackers exist?
Lots of flaws that would have to be worked out. Crime must exist, because he got ''killed'' for something or is joy-killing legal?
#2) I hate ''black and white'' scenarios. That''s what you''re giving as a choice, black and white. One side or the other. That''s just me, but I prefer games where the options are more open, particularly MMOGs.
#3) Neat game for kids... kinda funny.
#4) I love that whole world, the 5th Element world. I''d make it to where you can move up from cabby to chauffer to space ship pilot... maybe give a few different paths. Military pilot, police, black market, etc... But like I said, I''m kinda biased, since I like the world of 5th Element.
You''ve got good starts for games, but I wouldn''t say that #1 and #2 are finished ideas that are well fleshed out for my preferences. But then again, they are my preferences.

#1 is personally interesting to me, but cyber-punk is being dominated by Ion Storm and Deus Ex 1 & 2. Still, worth a try I suppose.

OK, thanks everyone. I feel better now.
Idea two is definitly my least thought-about one. I only came up with it yesterday morning and scribbled it down. It just occurred to me that almost every MMORPG I know of is fantasy-based, there don''t seem to be many space games. A quick google search proved me wrong, there are a few, but still I think the market is fairly open.
xg0blin: Thank you for being constructive In actual fact, idea #1 isn''t so much inspired by movies as it is by a game called Uplink (www.introversion.co.uk) that I think is excellent. It''s the only ''hacking'' game I know of, so there''s room for another.
Redneck Rampage: I haven''t seen/played the game, but it sounds like it''s more about violence and destruction than puzzle solving. You''re right about the vaguely south-park idea though, given some of my inital attempts at a sheep. :D
I haven''t yet seen Minority Report, so I don''t really know about that last comment... I''m hoping that the branching storyline will add depth to it. That is, even if you *fail* a mission, you don''t have to go back and replay - the next mission you play is just a different one.
solinear: There isn''t really much in the way of ''society'' in the World of The Future. In fact, there''s a big conspiracy theory plot which explains everything in the end - why you''re not being stopped immediately, why the soldiers tried to kill you, and why hacking was the only job available. You''re right that there are other ''scum'' around the place, but they all depend on the hackers to keep them invisible to the computer systems. Crime does exist, just not officially - because everything is so ultra-secure, ''you''d have to be a ghost to get by.''
I know what you mean about the idea being a little too monochromatic. The addition I''m thinking of is that you could just become a sort of mercenary for hire, who can be picked up by either side or by third parties, for whatever interest. Add sleazy space stations and stuff like that. To be honest, I doubt this particular idea will go anywhere - I''m not a big fan of MMORPG - but it''s worth thinking about.
Tacit: ''cyber-punk,'' love it it''s a fairly accurate description of my picture of the world in #1. Lots of dark shades of blue and green...
Thanks, everyone. I''m looking into developing a demo of #4 and then getting signed with a publisher so I can take it to XBox... perhaps a little ambitious I know, but better than nothing.

In my opinion, idea 1 is excellent and is the best and most original idea of them all. This must be the one you have spent the most time on so far since it seems like you have a lot more of this story thought out.
Idea 2 seems like it could be developed into something good, but be careful since it could end being very similar to some other games already out there.
Idea 3 is fairly original, but definitly not meant for a serious audience.
Idea 4 is good... but it seems a lot like a futuristic version of crazy taxy, which is a nice and original twist, just be careful it doesn''t end up being too much like the other game.
