3D studio max in 24 hours is a really good book. 24, 1 hour lessons.

Also I would look into Hash Animation Master 3D program. It''s pretty cheap, and it''s AWESOME! You have no idea how easy modeling and animation are until you use this program. I''ve switched from max to Hash, working with splines and patches allow you to create and animate just about anything you can think of and in less time than with polygons.
