My current goal is to develop a 2D RPG type game (such as Diablo), but I dont really have any direction as to what to do to begin learning. I am using Visual Basic (its good enough for 2D programming - and is easier to comprehend) 6.0 and I have DirectX7 and 8 installed on my computer. I cant find the SDK''s to either of them (just the runtimes on the microsoft.com/directx site). I dont really know what one to use though I''ve heard DX7 is more for 2D games. Could someone point me in the right direction (for a beginner with NO knowledge of DirectX at all)? Also, feedback from ANYTHING which I said is appreciated.
Get the DirectX 8.1 SDK. Since DirectX is COM you will be able to use every version before 8.1 as well (including DirectDraw 7).

I will not make a list of links... I will not make a list of links... I will not make a list of links...

Learn c or c++ (buy a book, read some tuts (cone3d)) Go for SDL (libsdl.org).
