I have an idea for a RTS game and just wanted to know what others thought of it. My idea is to make a game that takes place on planets like anyother RTS age of empires, starcraft, etc... But you advance like in civilization all the way to an advanced space age, which gives more gameplay elements, the game can then expand to space combat, the camera would then zoom out off the planet to an outer space view, you can land on other planets and begin civilizations on the and the camera would zoom back in. You could then have satellites that orbit planets and can cause damage on the planets surface but can be taken out by ships in outer space. Tell me what you think OoMMMoO
I think that''s a great idea. My team is doing something like that but we have countries of the world and you can choose any country you wanna lead and then have modern weapons, and then you can decleare peace or start a war with any country you want, but when you click on the map of the country you will zoom in onto a isometric map.Expect it June 2003 heh.

Thank You

Yes that was my idea, a game similar to civilization but realtime and being able to zoom out of the world and also play a space strategy game. I think the game would be funner if it was alot faster than civilization maybe like C&C or something like that.
Like Megalomania from Amiga

I think you have to be very careful about the level of detail in this game, or the players will get swamped in a matter of seconds with horrific amounts of micromanagement. The fact that you want to make it real time makes the situation even worse.

There is no way that you could manage something as complex as Civilization in real time, let alone effectively manage TWO or more games at once. You need to look carefully at what aspects of the game can be automated and which ones you want to focus the game on.

(Okay, so it ISN''T RTS)

Tell me what you think

Nothing. You talk about graphics and planets and gameplay elements and civilizations and camera movement, but you say it all so quickly that you say nothing. At all.

What makes this different from any other RTS other than scale (size)? What are the new gameplay elements introduced by expanding the civilization into space, or did you really just mean new tech and weapons? How do you handle level of information detail?

I''m not shooting down your idea - it has a lot of potential - but I''d like for you to consider these things and put up a better design. I mean, that''s why we''re here, isn''t it? To design better games...?
