Has anybody managed to get DVD movies running under Linux yet? I''ve been working on it for a couple of days and am about ready to shoot myself. Not that thats an unfamiliar feeling but still.
First I thought I would give Mplayer a run. Found out it can be next to imposible to install in some cases. So I looked at Xine. Hey found some RPM''s. Try that. Well that seamed to work except I''m missing 1 file. libasound.so.2 . Well if I try to run it the control bar pops up and error loading plugin. No more Xine. It could be the missing file. But I have now idea how to find it if it didn''t come with it. Tried to compile it but got all sorts of odd things and I''m not sure that did anything. If it did, it wasn''t of any use because I get the same thing. So back to Mplayer. Well I''m sorry we don''t like your version of GCC. You probably need to down grade. Yah I''ll get right on that. I''m sure that will be super easy. Anybody have any insite in to how I can find this file so I can see if that works? Hell anybody want to make me look stupid by talking about how easy it was just so I know its possible.
I will be the master of my DVD drive yet.

What distro are you using?
RPM''s are mostly incompatible between versions and distros. Thus, if you find a Xine RPM, it might not work with your distro. Next, GCC 3.x and GCC 2.x are binary incompatible, so you can''t use 3.x to compile 2.x programs. Both of those facts are unfortunate, and it makes installing stuff a pain.
libasound.so is part of KDE, if that helps. You might want to check your distro''s website rather than the maintainer''s if you want to find an appropriate RPM.
I personally haven''t had a chance to install linux on any computer with a DVD drive.

At current I''m running Mandrake 8.1 . Xine starts to run but hangs on the missing file I belive. I''ve search for the file it needs on my entire HD but no luck. As far as the not being compatible between distros the program was compiled on an SuSe system but the site said that they are known to work perfectly on others such as RH and Mandrake. I may have to try and find another Set somewhere and try them. Or the site said they will accept emails for help wich is very big of them. I may ask them where I can find the file. I''m gona try not to bug them but getting things run across all the different Linux factors is offten imposible without help or a brain much larger than my own.

libasound.so is not part of KDE its part of alsa. If your running Mandrake just use the Mandrake software manager to install the "alsa" rpm and that will fix the missing libasound.so problem. I''ve used Mandrake since version 7.1 and I love it... I also use MPlayer to watch DVDs in Linux. It works perfect for me.
Thanks,Zaephen
