Where do game developers go to look for jobs?

Just curious. I have posted jobs on computerjobs.com and monster.com and here and have gotten very few responses from developers. (Lots of responses from people who want to get into the art side of game developing.) If I were to post ads in the future, where should I go? I''m really serious. As recruiters, we get paid for finding good people. If we can''t find them through running ads, or searching for resumes in databases or resume banks, then we have to get a lot more creative about sourcing people, and it can be a lot more time consuming. www.gamasutra.com has alot of jobs, but they''re top game jobs too.

The best idea I can think of is to create a digital portfolio with whatever game related stuff you do, and send it to every company you wanna work for. No computer job recruiters wants to see your grades anymore (well, almost all), they want to see your work.

Yes, I have posted ongamasutra too. They don''t appear to get as much traffic as this site does.

With regard to entry level positions, that''s a touch one. Especially if you''re still in college. Smart employers will try to take advantage of the opportunity to get college students on board and train them while they''re fairly inexpensive, but they probably won''t pay people like me to help them find college students. Also, since companies need someone who can hit the ground running, they''re generally looking for someone with experience. My recommendation would be to show initiative by developing some applications on your own, or joining some of the many "projects" that are available on the Internet and making a contribution for free. Also, some schools will allow you to create games as class projects.

Just recently, we launched a new site which can be found at www.gameresumes.com/resume. It''s still a work in progress, but we want it to become a good resource for looking for people to hire. Eventually, we''ll have a section to list available jobs. For now, we''ve been posting them in the news, which means many thousands of people will see the ad. You may want to look at GameJobs.com for now.

I just checked out the site. It''s a really good start. I think that with all of the traffic you get on this site, you will do well.

I''ll try to contact you offline with a suggestion or two that would make it really nice from an employer/ recruiter perspective.

On an unrelated note, do you think that the powers that be on this site would be interested in an occasional article about finding jobs, preparing resumes, working with recruiters, interviewing, and so on?

some of them are not job related but at least programming related, other are, it was my source to look for a job a while ago, then i decided to go solo

It's good to be an outcast, you don't need to explain what you do, you just do it and say you don't belong there.
I think the problem with Game recruiters is right now every company is looking for the same thing. Experienced developers with strong 3D skills and history of shipping PC or next-gen console titles. Just look in the back of Game Developer any month to see what I mean.

The reasons you don''t get many responses for those kind of ads are:

1. Most of those people are employed or at least experienced enough that they pick who to work with directly.

2. They get so many cold calls from recruiters already, there is no need to answer an ad.

3. Too busy working that they don''t have time to look for a job.

In general, recruiting can be very effective at exposing people to a new field or bring people from outside in. But the focus of every company now is to hire people already on the inside. That is why we have such rampant poaching in the biz these days.

Place an ad saying you are looking for a good programmer who would like to get some experience in the biz and watch the emails roll in.

Just my thoughts.

Being one of said powers, I can say that yes, we would be interested in posting that type of article. We are always interested in well-written articles on diverse topics.

We''re also very interested in feedback on the resumes site. We want to make it as effective as possible.
