Tower Defense Indie Game Dev Blog #9: Rocket Towers, New Models and Optimizations

This week

This week's start was kind of slow, but at the end of the week I managed to add some few new cool features. I also optimized game's logic so now it runs much smoother on older machines. As well as this, I created new models for Ground-To-Air turret which you will be able to see in the screenshots and gameplay footage below.

Rocket turret

Rocket turret is Ground-To-Air as well as Ground-To-Ground which means that it can target both flying and land enemies. As of now it can not be upgraded and the model is still a placeholder, but soon I will change that. Turret's rocket explodes upon collision with ground or the enemy and deals the appropriate damage which is dependent on turret's stats.

Wall tower

Wall tower is a type of tower which can be used to construct a maze with very little money. It can be used to guide the enemies around other turrets to make them exposed to turret's locking radius for longer period of time, hence increasing the amount dealt to the enemy.

This tower automatically places appropriate model and updates surrounded wall towers with correct 3D models.

Next week

During the coming week I will be working on new tower types and will add possibility to upgrade rocket tower. I will also try to fix few minor bugs related to GUI. Other than that, I will try to optimize the game even more.

Hmm... I actually changed my mind about submitting an entry. But since you mentioned it, I might give it a go, I just need to finish up few things. But the game will only feature 1 level and flying tanks :D

If it has 1 level but at least 20 waves with a boss wave, you're good to go. :) Just double check the requirements.

Thanks, guys! Today I will add "Game Over" and "You Win" screens and I think that will be everything I need to be able to submit an entry :)

I finally got to try it on my win8 machine and it looks very good! I was not very good at stopping the enemies attacking think I need to spend a bit of time figuring out the strategy lol! :)

Yes, the game is pretty hard :D I would recommend you use as many slower towers as you can afford :D

I already downloaded it play with it to feel the game a bit hard it reminds me really of Command and Conquer I'm a fan of it ^_^y I will play it again thoroughly.

It might be too hard for a first level, but as I mentioned before this is nowhere near to being finished, so I will add option to choose difficulty and will balance the waves, turret stats and prices accordingly. Anyways, thanks for trying it out, it means a lot to me :))

The graphics, animations and sounds are great.  I liked your choice of music, you don't hear music of that genre a lot in video games and I think we need to hear more of it.  I started to prepare for the aerial attacks and built a Air Lazer tower that began to grow in size on me.  Eventually it took up the whole screen and I could no longer place anymore towers.  hmmm, I should have stuck around to see if that would also freeze the enemies in place.  


I know you've just added a few features to meet the requirements for the challenge, however; seeing as this is a project you intend to carry forward with I very much look forward to playing it once it's finished.  I don't mind helping out with play testing either.

Ahh... Yes, the bug where the tower grows in size. It happens if you double click the upgrade button, you can fix it by selling the tower and placing a new one there. But I will address that issue in the comming week. 

If you could play test the game, that would be great! I will contact you when I will need to play test the game, if that's alright with you :)
